My time in New York began with the fabulous Cherry Tastic at Benoit and the cherry theme carried on the following evening.
At Casa Lever, an icon of elegant Italian dining in Manhattan, I had the pleasure of tasting the 2020 Brunello di Montalcino by Donatella Cinelli Colombini. The wine unfolded with notes of black and red cherry layered with delicate florals and a whisper of oak. Its vibrant acidity allowed these flavors to dance along on medium tannins. Paired with veal loin, it revealed a thread of spice.
Donatella founded the winery Casato Prime Donne in 1998, an extraordinary milestone as the first Italian winery staffed entirely by women vintners. The estate spans seventeen hectares dedicated to Sangiovese, and its Brunello is crafted in the “original style”, inspired by the traditions Donatella encountered in the 1970s. The result is a timeless and deeply personal wine.
