Next Gen Napa

Le Artishasic Vin Clair, Cuvée No. 3

Another remarkable find at TORC Napa.

The 2019 Le Artishasic Vin Clair, Cuvée No. 3, reflects the new direction of California’s next generation of winemakers. A blend of the Italian grape, Ribolla Gialla, and Chardonnay, the wine balances Ribolla’s brightness and acidity with Chardonnay’s rounder texture. What stood out to me the most was its weight, a surprising substantial mouthfeel that felt more like a red wine. Aromas and flavors of green apple and lemon were layered with hints of caramel from ageing.

TORC’s seasonal menu featured shungiku (edible Japanese chrysanthemum) from Star Route Farms. It was lightly battered and fried tempura-style, with a yuzu dip and shichimi togarashi (Japanese seven spice chili blend). The Vin Clair’s acidity cut through the tempura and enhanced the slight bitterness of the shungiku.

The Vin Clair’s acidity shined with the Hamachi Tartare with yuzu, chile-miso, shiso and forbidden rice.

Kudos to TORC for finding this exciting wine and to Richard Von Saal for the striking label.
