Tucked into the hills of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, near the Slovenian border, Friuli Colli Orientali is one of Italy’s most respected regions for white wine. The vineyards of Ronchi di Cialla lie at a crossroads between Italy and Slovenia, where alpine and maritime influences create a microclimate ideal for aromatic, structured white wines. Cool air descending from the mountains meets the moderating warmth of the Adriatic Sea, producing steady ripening conditions that help preserve acidity while encouraging complexity. The east–southeast vineyard exposure allows the vines to benefit from gentle morning sun while avoiding excessive afternoon heat.
The friulano grape vines of Ronchi di Cialla are mature, approximately 50 years old. The grapes go through one day of skin maceration before fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks using native yeasts. This wine is aged on the lees for at least three months with frequent bâtonnage (stirring the sediment) that enhances texture and adds a subtle creaminess to the finished wine while maintaining freshness.
This Friulano balances lively acidity and fresh aromas green apple, lemon zest and delicate white blossoms with mineral undertones and texture from the lees.

I found this wonderful wine at cozy Pizzetta 211 in the Richmond District of San Francisco. With only four tables inside and a few tables outside, it’s important to go on weekdays right when it opens at 5 pm. Or be ready to wait for a table or order take-out.
